The Pyrotechnics Guild International (PGI) is inviting the public to experience one of the convention’s most anticipated traditions when Competition Night returns as part of the public Wisconsin Fireworks Festival on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Wisconsin International Raceway (WIR).
For fireworks enthusiasts, Competition Night offers a rare opportunity to see a side of the PGI Convention that many spectators never experience. While public audiences were invited to attend competition events at some past conventions, this unique convention tradition has not regularly been available to public audiences in recent years.
This year’s Wednesday night program combines competitive pyrotechnics with several special exhibition displays, creating one of the most diverse and exciting evenings of the entire festival.

A Night That Showcases the Best of PGI
Unlike a traditional fireworks display, PGI Competition Night highlights the creativity, craftsmanship, and innovation of pyrotechnicians from across the country as they present original entries designed to demonstrate both technical excellence and artistic vision.
Spectators will witness a variety of competition events showcasing the talent and imagination that have made the PGI Convention a world-renowned gathering of fireworks enthusiasts.
In addition to the competition events, Wednesday night’s program will feature several special displays showcasing different aspects of the pyrotechnic hobby and industry.
National Anthem Display by Astro Magic
The evening will begin with a patriotic National Anthem display produced by Astro Magic, officially opening Competition Night with a choreographed pyrotechnic tribute to America.
Junior Pyrotechnics Association (JPA) Display
The next generation of fireworks enthusiasts will take center stage as members of the Junior Pyrotechnics Association (JPA) present a special showcase display. The JPA program helps encourage youth involvement in fireworks safety, education, and the pyrotechnic arts while developing future leaders within the hobby.
PGI Competition Events
The heart of the evening will be the convention’s celebrated competition events, where talented PGI members present original pyrotechnic creations in pursuit of top honors. Public Show Nights Only
PGI reminds spectators that the Wisconsin Fireworks Festival is only open to the public on three designated show nights:
Saturday, August 8
Wednesday, August 12
Friday, August 14
The PGI Convention continues throughout the week as a private event for PGI members and registered convention attendees. Local authorities advise the public not to travel to Wisconsin International Raceway on non-public show nights.
The track entrance will be closed to the public, public parking lots will not be open, and there is no roadside or shoulder parking available near the venue. Vehicles parked along roadsides may be ticketed or towed.
Spectators are encouraged to attend one of the designated public performances and purchase tickets in advance.
What Happens if Weather Becomes a Concern?
PGI’s goal is always to present each show as scheduled. Fireworks displays are conducted in a wide range of weather conditions, but safety remains the organization’s top priority.
In the event severe weather makes it unsafe to conduct a performance, PGI’s policy is to postpone rather than cancel the show whenever possible.
If a postponement becomes necessary, organizers will make the decision as early in the day as practical. All ticket holders will receive notification via email, and tickets will be honored for the rescheduled performance. Attendees will see the same show they originally purchased.
Any schedule changes will also be communicated through local television media outlets, the PGI website, and PGI social media channels, which collectively reach more than 1.5 million followers.
