Retired educator, trailblazing school administrator, and award-winning author Janice Kenyatta is advancing a timeless message for children through her multiple award-winning children’s book, Just As It Is!. Created for children ages three to ten, the book encourages young readers to love themselves while respecting and appreciating the differences they see in others.
At the heart of Just As It Is! are two essential lessons: children should begin developing self-love early in life, and they should learn to value people regardless of their ethnic or cultural backgrounds. Janice Kenyatta believes these principles should be introduced when children are still young and consistently reinforced by parents, educators, caregivers, and other positive adults.

The manuscript was originally written more than 25 years ago. Although life circumstances delayed its publication, it was eventually rediscovered following a significant personal transition. For Janice Kenyatta, the passage of time only reinforced the message’s continued importance and relevance.
“In divisive and challenging times, children need to hear these lessons repeatedly,” Janice Kenyatta said. “The more we learn, the less we fear.”
Janice Kenyatta brings more than 40 years of experience in career and technical education to her work as an author and advocate. Her professional career includes teaching high school Business Education, serving as an adjunct instructor at multiple community colleges, and working as the Experiential Learning and Internship Manager at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
She also made history as the first African American and the first woman to serve as Supervisor of Career and Technical Education at Essex County Vocational and Technical Schools in northern New Jersey. In that leadership position, she supervised 70 teachers across 31 career and technical education programs.
Janice Kenyatta holds a master’s degree in Business Education and postgraduate supervisory certification in Career and Technical Education in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. She is also the co-author of BlackFolk’s Hair Revisited: Secrets, Shame, and Liberation.
Through Just As It Is!, Janice Kenyatta hopes to encourage families, schools, and communities to begin meaningful conversations about self-worth, diversity, multicultural understanding, and mutual respect before negative attitudes or personal insecurities have an opportunity to take root.
