Dartmouth Family Expands Beloved Home with Custom Addition by Habermehl Contracting Ltd.

DARTMOUTH, NOVA SCOTIA — May 2026 – A growing family near downtown Dartmouth has transformed their longtime home into a more functional and personalized living space thanks to a thoughtfully designed custom addition completed by Habermehl Contracting Ltd.. The project combined practical upgrades with personal passions, creating a home tailored to the family’s evolving lifestyle without leaving the neighborhood they love.
The addition expanded the home’s existing footprint with a new upper-level primary bedroom featuring a spacious walk-in closet and private ensuite bathroom. On the main floor, the project introduced a dedicated music room designed with advanced sound barrier construction, allowing the homeowners to fully enjoy their musical interests while maintaining comfort throughout the rest of the home. An office nook was also added to provide additional functionality for work and daily living.

To reduce sound transfer in the music room, the construction team incorporated several acoustic-enhancing materials and techniques, including fiberglass insulation in the walls and ceiling, resilient channel installation, Sonopan soundproofing panels, and two layers of 5/8-inch drywall. These combined elements created a significantly improved sound barrier system while maintaining the aesthetics and comfort of the home.
The addition was constructed on a standard frost wall foundation and framed with wood construction designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing structure. Careful attention was given to tying the new spaces into the original home for a cohesive appearance and flow.
As part of the home’s modernization, the project also included substantial HVAC upgrades. Three ductless heat pumps were added to the upper-floor bedrooms, while the home’s existing furnace was upgraded to a ducted heat pump system. The addition was also connected to a heat recovery ventilation (HRV) system to improve indoor air quality and overall efficiency.
Material selections throughout the project were chosen to balance durability, continuity, and design. Laminate flooring was installed on the main floor of the addition, while the new primary bedroom featured real hardwood flooring carefully matched to the existing flooring throughout the home.
