HONG KONG, HK / ACCESS Newswire / May 26, 2026 / M5Stack, a global provider of modular IoT and embedded development platforms, today announced the launch of CardputerZero, a new handheld Linux device that brings the Cardputer series into the Linux era. Powered by the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 0 (CM0), CardputerZero expands the original Cardputer concept from an ESP32-based microcontroller device into a more capable portable platform for development, prototyping, and field use.
Designed for makers, developers, and hardware enthusiasts, CardputerZero combines a quad-core Cortex-A53 processor, 1.9-inch display, 46-key keyboard, 8MP camera, IMU, and RTC in a compact handheld format. With built-in battery power and support for audio and video processing, it is designed to serve as a portable Linux terminal for coding, debugging, and multimedia experimentation.
CardputerZero supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Ethernet, along with expandable storage via microSD and a switchable USB host/device interface. It also provides access to essential embedded I/O including I2C, UART, SPI, and GPIO, making it suitable for a wide range of hardware and software workflows.
“CardputerZero represents the next step in the evolution of the Cardputer platform,” said Jimmy, CEO and Founder at M5Stack. “By bringing Linux into this compact form factor, we’re giving developers a more flexible portable tool for prototyping, field diagnostics, and creative embedded applications.”
Two Models for Different Needs
CardputerZero is available in two versions:
-
CardputerZero: includes the full feature set, including 8MP camera, IMU, and a bundled 32GB microSD card
-
CardputerZero Lite: a lower-cost version without the camera, IMU, or bundled microSD card
While preserving the signature design language of the Cardputer series – including its integrated display, keyboard, and battery-powered form factor – the new platform introduces major upgrades in processing capability, I/O flexibility, and multimedia support.
Built for Portable Linux Workflows
With its Linux-based architecture, CardputerZero supports a variety of practical use cases in a single portable device.
As a Pocket Linux Lab, CardputerZero can be used for lightweight coding and scripting, remote SSH access, command-line workflows, and on-site troubleshooting. Its compact design makes it well suited for developers who need a portable terminal for field diagnostics, embedded development, and device maintenance.
CardputerZero also supports wireless research, protocol experimentation, and network diagnostics through standard Linux toolchains. Optional hardware add-ons further extend its functionality, including a Cap CC1101 with NFC and sub-GHz (CC1101) support, as well as a LoRa Cap for long-range wireless communication and mesh networking experiments.
In addition to technical workflows, CardputerZero also supports lightweight entertainment and multimedia applications, including simple gaming, MP3 playback, and basic video playback. With HDMI output, camera support, microphone, and speaker, it can also be used in portable media and interactive demo scenarios.
Built on a Strong Community Foundation
The launch of CardputerZero builds on the momentum of the original Cardputer, first introduced in 2023. Over the past three years, the Cardputer series has developed an active global community of makers and developers who have created and shared firmware, tools, and projects across platforms such as GitHub and M5Burner. Popular community projects available through M5Burner – including M5Launcher, Bruce and Evil-Cardputer – have each surpassed 50,000 downloads, underscoring the strong momentum behind the Cardputer ecosystem. Community-developed software has helped expand the platform into areas such as retro gaming, remote control, UI dashboards, and wireless research, demonstrating both the versatility of the hardware and the enthusiasm of its user base.
With CardputerZero, M5Stack aims to extend that ecosystem into Linux-based development, opening the door to deeper customization, broader software compatibility, and more advanced edge computing applications.
Availability
CardputerZero is now live on Kickstarter, with a special Early Bird offer of $104 available for the first 72 hours.
